Eat spicy Indian food to beat H1N1

Nirad Mudur / DNAThursday, November 12, 2009 8:43 IST

Bangalore: The next time you are served spicy vegetarian food do not grimace, because it is the much sought-after manna from heaven that has been lately found to effectively stave off the fatal impact of the dreaded H1N1 virus.

Researches have thrown light on the possibility of spicy Indian vegetarian menus restricting the number of swine flu deaths to just over 500 in a country with a population of 1.03 billion. The World Health Organisation (WHO) had initially warned that India would be the hotspot of swine flu impact.

Nutritionists, too, now attribute the muted impact of swine flu in India to spicy dishes, which are rich in anti-oxidants that boost the body's immunity system. Bangalore-based nutritionists told DNA that spicy Indian menus could just be the right answer to effectively prevent contracting the H1N1 virus.

Indians have a lot of vegetables, fruits and spices on their menu - a fitting recipe to fight the swine flu infection, the nutritionists said.

"Indian food has a lot of spices and herbs, vegetables and fruits, and there is no doubt that this has helped fight the infection among Indian swine flu patients, minimising the mortality rate," says Farhana Afroz, chief nutritionist and head of dietetics department, Wockhardt Hospital, Bannerghatta Road.

A research by an Alabama team in the US has found that high levels of antioxidants -- present in spices, vegetables and fruits -- can neutralise a lethal action by a villainous protein that destroys crucial cells in the inner linings of the lungs.

These cells, known as epithelial cells, expel fluids from within the lungs and prevent pneumonia, the most common cause of death among H1N1 patients. But once the cells are destroyed by the protein, the lungs retain fluid, leading to pneumonia.

The Alabama research, published in the November issue of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) Journal, shows how antioxidants that are found in abundance in plant-based foods, might hold the key in preventing the flu virus from wreaking havoc on human lungs.

The research team first injected frog eggs with anti-oxidants, and then infused the M2 protein along with the lung cells of a mouse into them. They discovered that the antioxidants in the frog eggs stopped the M2 protein from destroying the mice's lung cells.

Winter chill brings on increase in swine flu cases

New Delhi, Nov 19 (IANS) With the winter chill now in the air, swine flu cases in the national capital have recorded a sudden jump in the past two days. Doctors Thursday warned that H1N1 infections could see a rise as the virus spreads faster during winter.

The capital Wednesday reported 63 swine cases while on Tuesday 62 people reported positive for H1N1. This is a sharp increase from the 16 and 23 cases reported Monday and Sunday, respectively.

'The temperature has dipped in the northern parts of the country in the past few days. With the onset of winter, swine flu cases will increase but as of now the infection is mild and the morbidity is not much,' Randeep Guleria, head of medicine at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), told IANS.

Guleria said people need to be more vigilant and take precautions during the winter.

'People should visit a designated health facility if they notice flu-like symptoms. Those in the target group like the elderly, children, pregnant women, heart and diabetic patients should take extra care during the winter,' said Guleria.

S. Chatterjee, senior consultant internal medicine at the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, said people should avoid crowded places and take necessary precautions while stepping out.

'Cover your face while sneezing and wash hands after regular interval - these are a must to prevent the spread of the H1N1 infection,' said Chatterjee.

The Delhi government said necessary measures are in place to check the increase of swine flu cases.

'The situation is under control and the government is doing its best to provide treatment to H1N1 patients in government hospitals. People should visit a doctor at the earliest on noticing symptoms of swine flu,' said Delhi Health Minister Kiran Walia.

Delhi with 3,900 swine flu cases tops the list of people affected with H1N1 in the country. India has so far reported 534 swine flu deaths.

H1N1 Unexpected Weakness Revealed
ANI
 Friday, December 11, 2009

Washington : A new American study has found a weakness in H1N1's method for dodging detection by the immune system.

Jianpeng Ma, professor in bioengineering at Rice University and graduate student Jun Shen and Qinghua Wang, an assistant professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at Baylor College of Medicine, compared the sequences of over 300 strains of H1N1 to track its evolution. The researchers were particularly examining hemagglutinin (HA), the protein "hook" that enables the virus to attach itself to and infect host cells.

Earlier research had found that five regions of H1N1's HA serve as antigenic sites, the protein fragments that activate the body's immune system. These antigenic sites constantly reorder their amino-acid sequences in the continuous cat-and-mouse game that viruses play to live on. Researchers discovered several vital residues involved in both antigenic sites and the receptor-binding site, the part of the protein that affixes to a cell and allows the virus to attack.

Ma said; "The site is known, but no one thought it was involved in the immune system. In order to recognize the receptor, that particular region has to be robust.... But it turns out this region is not only variable, but also interacts with the immune system."

If a virus eludes antibodies, all five antigenic sites would have to mask themselves by mutating. The new discovery led the researchers to believe the receptor-binding residues would also have to mutate, but not so much that the binding no longer functions.

Ma explained; "If the binding is abolished, the virus dies." He pointed out that such dual-function residues are a likely block for the virus.
He said: "It becomes a weak link and provides us with a window into the virus that we can monitor.... The virus's bottleneck is our opportunity."

Wang said: "An underlying implication is that this may not be restricted to H1N1...It may apply to other influenza viruses as well. If studying viral evolution can help predict what will cause a severe problem in humans, you can actually pre-stock vaccines, which will save time."

Human Protein that prevents H1N1 Influenza Infection found
ANI Friday, December 18, 2009

Washington : A naturally occurring human protein that helps prevent infection by H1N1 influenza and other viruses,
including West Nile and dengue virus, has been identified.

A research team led by Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator Stephen J Elledge and his colleague, Abraham Brass, discovered that human cells respond to infection by the H1N1 influenza virus by ramping up production of proteins that have unexpectedly powerful antiviral effects.

In cultured human cells, those proteins, whose functions were previously unknown, block the
replication of H1N1 influenza virus, West Nile virus, and dengue virus.

The unexpected discovery, reported December 17, 2009, in an early online article in the journal Cell,
could lead to the development of more effective antiviral drugs, including prophylactic drugs that could be used to slow influenza transmission.

Swine Flu Vaccine made by Killing Sharks
ANI - Wednesday, December 30, 2009

Washignton: Reports indicate that vaccines being made to protect people from swine flu are developed by killing sharks, thus endangering the animals further. According to a report in National Geographic News, millions of doses of the pandemic H1N1/09 vaccine contain a substance called squalene, which is extracted from shark livers.

More commonly found in beauty products such as skin creams, squalene can be used to make an adjuvant, a compound that boosts the body's immune response. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends adjuvant-based vaccines, because they allow drug makers to create doses that use less of the active component, increasing available supplies.

Olive oil, wheat germ oil, and rice bran oil also naturally contain squalene, albeit in smaller amounts. But for now, squalene is primarily harvested from sharks caught by commercial fishers, especially deepwater species. "There are several very disturbing issues associated with use of shark-liver-oil squalene," said Mary O'Malley, co-founder of the volunteer-run advocacy group Shark Safe Network. "The deepwater sharks targeted have extremely low reproductive rates, and many are threatened species," she added.

For example, one supplier has dubbed the gulper shark the Rolls-Royce of squalene-producing sharks, but the gulper is listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN's) Red List of Threatened Species, meaning the species faces a high risk of extinction.

Although vaccines containing squalene have not yet been approved for use in the US', they are being distributed elsewhere, including Europe and Canada. GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), a major swine-flu vaccine producer, announced in October this year that it had received orders for 440 million doses of vaccine containing adjuvant. The adjuvant in GSK's vaccines, which have been administered in 26 countries so far, contains shark-liver squalene, company spokesperson Clare Eldred confirmed in a statement.

O'Malley, of the Shark Safe Network, estimated that GSK's 440 million doses would require at least 9,700 pounds (4,400 kilograms) of shark oil, based on the stated squalene content of 10.69 milligrams in a dose. A shark-squalene alternative isn't yet an option for adjuvant vaccine makers, according to GSK's Eldred. The drug company is currently looking at non-animal squalene sources, including olive oil. But at the moment, "we are unable to find an alternative of high enough grade," she said.
